In 1958, Dr. Walsh persuaded President Eisenhower to donate a U.S. Navy hospital ship, the U.S.S. Consolation.

With $150, a dream, and the support of corporations and individuals, the ship was transformed into the S.S. HOPE,  a 15,000 ton ship had three operating theatres, quarantine areas, X-ray facilities, a pharmacy and training rooms, and the organization known as Project HOPE was born.

Over the next two years, the S.S. HOPE was refitted and equipped for its new role as a peace-time hospital ship. The call was put out for American doctors, nurses, and technologists to share their skills and knowledge with the people of developing nations – teaching while healing. For every American on board, there would be a counterpart to be trained.

The S.S. Hope had a so-called “Iron Cow” for producing milk from milk powder. Normally she carried on board 100 doctors and 150 auxiliary medical personnel.
Finally, on September 22, 1960, the S.S. HOPE set sail from San Francisco bound for Indonesia.
While the S.S. HOPE was retired in 1974, the spirit of its voyages lives on in HOPE’s land-based programs and through the testimony of the HOPE Alumni.
The S.S. HOPE completed 11 voyages traveling to Indonesia, Vietnam, Peru, Ecuador, Guinea, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Tunisia, Jamaica, and Brazil.
This Year Project Hope Celebrates it’s 50th Anniversary at Key Bridge Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia October 9 through October 11, 2008.

My Dad is my hero and I take this moment to share the many reasons I feel this way.

He is a man with a heart full of Love and Compassion,

A man of  strong character and deep integrity,  that is devoted to his entire family,  he has a great spirit and a passion for living life to the fullest. He likes to travel and visit other places but his heart always brings him back to the ocean shores.

Always with a smile, he is one with a sense of humour and a great story teller,  who enjoys dancing and loves music. This is a man who in my hero and in my eyes he’s a giant among men.

Dr. Carlos German Reyes Asanza was born in a southern town called  Zaruma,  the first born to Dr. Carlos Elicio Reyes Andrade y Dona Maria Ofelia Asanza Maldonado.

He completed his early education in Loja and Guayaquil before moving to Cuenca, graduating as a Doctor in Medicine.

He completed his medical education in Chile, specializing in the field of Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN).

He was hired by the army, moving from town to town to fulfill his duty as an Army Hospital Director.

He did not hesitate to work for many months with the American Medical ship called “SS HOPE”

He was commissioned by the Government of Ecuador  to handle the medical needs for the rural areas in our province (which were in much need for medical attention), my Dad invested many years of his professional life  travelling from small towns to remote villages throughout the province. On many occassions his only means of transportation was to hop on a mule to provide the villagers with medical services.

He is a pioneer in creating Medical Centres in many rural towns in the Province of Azuay.

My Dad is a winner all his Life,  and a living example for all his children to follow.  Dad is a man of  continuous achievements, yet  he possess a humility that is awe inspiring. He simply let all his actions and achievements speak for themselves.

Dad, we are in awe of all your achievements, and we take this moment to say how very proud we are to have YOU as Our Father.

Dad in this auspicious occasion …

I speak on behalf of all of us …

All your children …

You are a very special person to all of us and here are just a few the reasons why ….

Your Unconditional Love

Throughout your very busy Life, we have always felt Your Deep Love for all of us.

We  always felt protected,

and although now that we are all grown up …

We still feel your unconditional Love for us,

And Yes …

You are still here protecting us all.

Dad, no matter where we are,

our lives are blessed with that special feeling of security …

that we can always come home

Its almost like we are still kids, and your Welcome Mat for all of us never wears out. It is that very, very special Unconditional Love that makes our lives whole and unafraid of Life’s challenges, because Dad is Always here with his arms out, and we can snuggle close under his protection.

We are blessed to have you as our dad …

Dad we Love you and admire you with all our heart  …

You’ve always been very caring and you love your children equally,

Please keep calling us anytime day or night,

and thank you for being here for all of us.

Your Respect

Thank You for being the Man you are,

You did not always agree with our choices

but you repected us and allowed us to make our mistakes.

Your endearing respect for us, allowed us to grow up independent,

so much so …

that despite all our mistakes,

It is your respect for us, even as children …

that prepared us for the many challenges in our lives as adults…

Your quiet respect for us is the main reason for our achievements and our success as adults.

In this way, all our achievements, all our successes are not ours,

They are your achievements, Your Successes

… and your gift to all of us.

Dad,

I am proud to be a member of Your Team,

I am proud to be your Daughter,

I am Proud to be a Member of this family.

Dad, You are My Hero.

CHARACTER

You are living your life by example and even now …

The care you have for us shines  like a beacon for all of us to follow…

Dad,

Thank you for being always there,

Thank You for sharing your life with us,

Thank You for a life with a Mother and a Father …

Thank You for being Home…

It takes a special man, one with a special character to face the challenges of life, a man with a wife and six children, to come home day after day and care for his family.

We are grateful that you are there for us, from babies to right now,

protecting us through thick and thin you stuck it out, and today

although we have all flown the nest

we still feel your love, your care, your protection,

and we know you are there for us.

CARING

Thank you for your late night calls,

Thank You for worrying over us.

It is your care and your love that kept us a close and loving family,

a family that yearns to be together, that can overcome difficulties, quarrels and like a strong rubber band, no matter how much it is stretched thin, we spring back together , loving and caring for each other. It is your example for caring that allows this family to be strong, and to look after each other.

Now, you are here, right in front of me. It takes a very caring and loving  dad to uproot his life and the life of his wife to be with all of us, his children.

Mom and Dad, Thank You for caring enough to leave your home in Ecuador to Live here in Canada  with us

Prosperity

Most people think that having a Lot of Money is what prosperity is all about. Of course Money is a part of prosperity…

Even if I did not have one penny,

We are still very rich because we have you as our DAD.

Yes, You are my Hero,

I Love You Dearly.

For all of these reasons Dad, we honour you tonight!
